External Advisory Group

GTA's External Advisory Group comprises five highly-regarded business professionals who have generously agreed to act as a source of information and advice to GTA's CEO. Members of the Group have a wealth of experience and skills which will be tapped to help develop GTA's strategic direction; their combined expertise will also be an excellent sounding board for ideas. It is anticipated that the Group will meet bi-annually.




John Buchanan

John has degrees in history, law and economics as well as a PhD in work and organisational studies. As Deputy Director of ACIRRT, the Australian Centre for Industrial Relations Research and Training at Sydney University, John has lead a large number of research teams that have examined a wide range of issues concerned with the changing nature of work.

His recently completed PhD examined the impact of the metals restructuring model on the metal and engineering labour market between 1985 and 2000. The most recent publications of relevance to this project are Rethinking Poverty, Inequity and Disadvantage in Australia (2000), Making the Grade? Globalisation and the Training Market in Australia (2000), Beyond the Fragments: The Experiences of a Community-based Labour Hire Firm in Achieving Flexibility with Fairness for Low-paid Casual Workers (1999), The Development of Quality Arrangements in Group Training (1997) and National Quality Arrangements for Group Training: Final Report on Key Performance Indicators (1998).
Professor John Hewson
Chairman, The John Hewson Group

John is an economic and financial expert with experience in academia, business, government, media and the financial system.  His academic career has included 11 years as Professor of Economics, four years as Head of the School of Economics at the University of NSW, and 2 years as Dean, Macquarie Graduate School of Management and Professor of Management at Macquarie University.

His political career included eight years as the federal member of Wentworth, several Shadow portfolios and four years as Leader of the Liberal Party and Federal Coalition in Opposition.

Since leaving politics in 1995, John has run his own investment banking business and is an active director on the boards of many public and private companies as well as serving as chairman or patron for several not-for-profit organisations.  He also writes a weekly column for the Australian Financial Review.

Sally Sinclair

Sally Sinclair is the CEO of the National Employment Services Association (NESA), the industry association for the employment services sector.

Prior to her appointment with NESA, Sally was Board Member and CEO of a community organization, WorkPlacement, delivering Job Network, Community Work Co-ordinator, and Work for the Dole contracts, as well as other employment services and research projects as part of a business community response to youth unemployment.

Sally’s previous experience includes membership of various government and educational Boards and committees e.g. founding Board Member and inaugural Chair of NESA; Board Member of the Employment Services Regulatory Authority (ESRA), and member of the Employment Services Industry Reference Group. During this period, Sally was also Managing Director of Employment Express, a private sector employment services provider. Prior to joining the employment services industry Sally had an extensive background in corporate human resources management and executive recruitment consulting and management.
